Citations & Content Gaps

See which sources AI engines cite and where you are missing.

Being mentioned by an AI model is good. Being cited (linked as the source the answer is built on) is better. This page covers how Grandranker tracks citations and how it finds content gaps: queries where competitors show up in AI answers and you don't.

Competitor comparison inside AI Overviews

Where citation data appears

Citation tracking is built into every AI Overviews scan:

  • Dashboard tab: the "Linked to Your Site" card shows your overall citation rate: how often AI links back to your website as a source, with its trend.
  • Platforms tab: each platform card has its own Citations bar, so you can see which models cite you and which only mention you.
  • Query detail page: open any query from the Queries tab to see the raw responses per platform. Each response lists the citations extracted from it and highlights when one of them is yours.

Tracked domains

You can track citation performance for domains other than your own. In Settings β†’ Tracked Domains, add a domain (e.g. ahrefs.com) to compare how often other sites get cited by AI models versus yours. This is useful for benchmarking against a competitor's site or an industry publication you'd like to displace.

Citation Exchange

Grandranker runs an opt-in Citation Exchange. When you join (Settings β†’ Citation Exchange), your brand becomes eligible to be mentioned naturally in other members' AI-optimized articles, and relevant brands from the pool are cited in yours. The panel shows how many citations you've received, how many you've given, and how many other brands are in your industry pool. You can opt out at any time.

The exchange only places relevant, in-context citations. It's a way to seed the cross-site references AI models use as evidence, not a link scheme.

Content gaps

A content gap is a query where at least one competitor appears in the AI response but your brand doesn't. Grandranker detects gaps automatically from your scan data. Each gap shows:

  • The query text and its category.
  • Which AI platforms you're missing from.
  • Which competitors are appearing there instead.

Closing a gap

The fastest fix for a gap is publishing content that directly answers the query. Each gap has a Generate Article button that creates an article for that query using your normal article settings; it lands in your drafts like any other generated piece, ready to review and publish. You can also select multiple queries on the Queries tab and bulk-generate articles for all of them.

After publishing, the next scans show whether the new content earned you a mention or citation for that query. Give it a few scan cycles. AI platforms with web search pick up new content faster than those working from training data.

FAQ

Why does AI cite my competitor's blog instead of mine for the same topic?

AI models prefer sources that are easy to parse and verify: clear structure, direct answers, schema markup. Run a GEO Audit to check whether your pages are technically citable, then compare your content against the queries in your gap list.

No content gaps are showing. Is that right?

If no gaps are detected, your brand appears wherever your competitors do in the scanned responses. Keep the query list sharp (see Queries & Prompts). Gaps can only be found for queries you actually monitor.
