How to improve AI visibility: 7 steps that get you cited

9 min read·Updated July 18, 2026

When ChatGPT or Google AI recommends businesses in your category, you are either in the answer or invisible. This guide covers the 7 steps that decide which one you are. No SEO background required.

Quick answer

To improve AI visibility, lead every important page with a 40-80 word direct answer, describe your business consistently everywhere with Organization schema, add FAQPage and Article markup, publish one focused page per question buyers ask, and earn third-party mentions in directories, reviews, and communities. Measure with a fixed prompt set across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, then re-check monthly. Most businesses see first new mentions in 6 to 12 weeks.

Why AI visibility is now a real channel

Your buyers have changed how they research. Instead of scanning ten blue links, a growing share asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini directly, or reads the AI Overview that Google now places above the results. Those answers name three to five businesses. Everyone else gets nothing.

The good news: AI engines are predictable. They favor sources that answer questions directly, describe themselves clearly, and are corroborated by other sites. That is what AI visibility optimization means in practice, and none of it requires an SEO background.

The 7 steps below are ordered deliberately. Measure first, fix your own pages next, then build the external signals. If you want the deeper theory behind the tactics, the complete guide to Generative Engine Optimization covers it. This page is the practical checklist.

1

Measure your baseline

You cannot improve what you have never measured. Start by writing down 10 to 20 prompts your actual buyers would type. Not keywords, prompts. Think "best CRM for a 5-person real estate team", "is [your brand] legit", or "[your brand] vs [competitor]".

Run each prompt in four places: ChatGPT (with web search on), Perplexity, Gemini, and a normal Google search to catch AI Overviews. For every prompt, record three things in a spreadsheet: were you mentioned, were you cited with a link, and which competitors appeared instead. That spreadsheet is your scorecard for the next six months.

If you want the fast version, run your domain through the free AI visibility checker. It queries the major engines for you and shows where your brand shows up today. Either way, do not skip this step. The gap between what owners assume and what AI engines actually say about them is usually the most useful finding of the whole process.

2

Lead every page with an extractable answer

AI engines quote blocks, not essays. When ChatGPT builds an answer, or Google assembles an AI Overview the way we break down in our guide on how to appear in AI Overviews, it lifts short, self-contained passages that resolve the question on their own. If your page opens with three paragraphs of backstory before getting to the point, there is nothing to lift.

The fix is structural. Directly under your H1, and under each question-style H2, place a 40-80 word direct answer. State the answer plainly in the first sentence, add the one or two facts that support it, then go into detail below. The quick answer box at the top of this page is exactly that pattern in use.

Weak opener: "In today's fast-moving digital landscape, businesses face many challenges when it comes to online bookkeeping..."

Extractable opener: "Online bookkeeping for a small e-commerce store costs $150 to $400 per month. The price depends on transaction volume and whether payroll is included. Here is how the three main pricing models compare."

Apply this to your five most important pages first. To see how extractable a page already is, run it through the free GEO score checker, which grades exactly this kind of structure.

3

Build entity clarity

AI models think in entities: distinct things with names, attributes, and relationships. If the model is not certain what your business is, who it serves, and how it differs from a similarly named company, it will not risk recommending you. Ambiguity kills AI search visibility more quietly than any other problem.

Three fixes. First, use one exact brand name everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories. "Acme Analytics" and "Acme Analytics Inc." and "AcmeAnalytics.io" read as three weaker entities instead of one strong one. Second, add Organization schema to your homepage with a sameAs list pointing to your LinkedIn, social profiles, and major directory listings, so every profile reinforces the same entity.

Third, write an about page that states plainly what you do, for whom, since when, and from where. One sentence a model could quote verbatim: "Acme Analytics is a reporting tool for Shopify stores with 2 to 20 employees, founded in 2021 in Austin, Texas." Entity clarity is also the foundation for assistant answers, which our guide on how to get mentioned by ChatGPT builds on in detail.

4

Add the schema AI engines actually read

Schema markup is structured data (JSON-LD code in your page's head) that labels your content so machines do not have to guess. A human sees a list of questions and answers. A parser sees the same thing only if you tag it as FAQPage. For AI visibility optimization, three types do most of the work:

  • Organization on your homepage: name, logo, description, sameAs links. This is the entity anchor from step 3.

  • Article on guides and blog posts: headline, author, dates. Publication and update dates feed the freshness signals engines check.

  • FAQPage on any page with a Q&A section: pre-packaged question and answer pairs, the easiest format for an engine to reuse.

Most CMS platforms handle this with a plugin or a paste-in code block, so it is a one-afternoon job. Copy-ready JSON-LD templates are in our schema for AI guide. While you are in technical mode, publish an llms.txt file too: a simple curated index of your best pages for AI crawlers, explained in the llms.txt guide.

5

Cover the questions in your category

AI answers are assembled from pages that answer specific questions. If nobody asks a question your site answers, you never get pulled into the response. So map the questions first: Google's People Also Ask boxes for your main terms, autocomplete suggestions, the questions prospects ask on sales calls, and the comparison prompts from your step 1 scorecard.

Then publish one focused page per question cluster. "How much does X cost", "X vs Y", and "best X for [specific niche]" each deserve their own page with an extractable answer up top. Resist the mega-page instinct. A single 5,000-word page that touches twelve questions loses to twelve pages that each answer one question well, because engines match sources to prompts at the page level.

Prioritize comparison and "best" questions. Those are the prompts buyers ask right before spending money, and AI engines answer them by leaning on comparison content. If no comparison page in your category mentions you, the answer will not either. This is the highest-effort step in the list, and also the reason a category leader is a leader.

6

Earn third-party mentions

AI engines weight corroboration. When only your own website says you are the best option, that is a claim. When directories, review platforms, and community threads say it too, that is evidence. Models are trained to prefer the consensus answer, which is why the same few brands keep appearing in every response.

Work the sources AI engines already cite. Get listed in the directories that matter for your category: G2 and Capterra for software, Clutch for services, plus the one or two directories specific to your industry. Ask happy customers for reviews there and on Google. Show up usefully in Reddit and niche community threads where your category gets discussed, because assistants quote those threads constantly. Roundup articles matter for the same reason: lists like the best AI visibility platforms compared are exactly the kind of source an engine leans on when someone asks for recommendations, and being absent from your category's equivalents is a visibility ceiling.

A realistic target: 10 to 15 quality third-party mentions over a quarter. That is outreach work, not publishing work, and it is the step most businesses skip. It is also the step that most reliably moves brand mentions in ChatGPT.

7

Stay fresh and re-check monthly

AI answers move. Models get refreshed, search indexes update daily, and a competitor publishing one strong comparison page can rewrite the answer for your whole category. A mention you earn in March can silently disappear in June, and you will not notice unless you look.

So make the step 1 scorecard a monthly habit. Re-run the same prompt set, log mentions and citations, and compare against last month. When you lose a mention, check what the engine now cites instead. That source is your to-do list: match its answer quality or earn a mention on it.

Keep your pages fresh too. Update pricing, stats, and dates on your key pages at least quarterly, because engines demote stale sources and both Article schema and visible dates advertise exactly how old your content is. If manually re-running prompts every month sounds like a chore, an automated AI visibility tracker runs your prompt set on a schedule and alerts you when a mention appears or drops.

The honest tradeoff

One optimized page rarely moves the needle alone. AI engines reward accumulated evidence: a site that answers many related questions, an entity confirmed across many sources, freshness maintained over time. Expect to publish and do outreach consistently for three to six months before mentions become regular, with the technical steps (2 through 4) paying off first. If you need results next week, run ads. If you want to own the answer in your category, this is the work.

Frequently asked

Common questions about improving your AI visibility.

Expect first movement in 6 to 12 weeks and meaningful change in 3 to 6 months. Quick technical fixes like schema and an extractable answer block can get an individual page cited within weeks. Brand mentions in ChatGPT or Gemini move slower because they depend on third-party corroboration and, for some answers, model training cycles. Re-run your prompt set monthly so you catch changes early instead of guessing.
