Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are concise, AI-generated answers that appear above the traditional list of results for many queries. Drawing on Google's generative models, they synthesize information from multiple web pages and cite the sources used, so users get an answer without clicking through.

AI Overviews evolved from earlier experiments such as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) and now reach a large share of informational queries. For publishers, being cited in an AI Overview is a prime visibility placement, sitting above the standard organic results.

AI Overviews break a query into sub-questions, retrieve passages that answer each one, and assemble them into a summary with citations. Analysis of these citations shows that a growing share come from pages outside the top few traditional positions, which means citation is winnable even without ranking first.

The cited passages tend to share traits: concise, self-contained answers placed near the top of a section, clear structure, and definitive language. Pages with strong topical authority and schema are also more likely to be selected.

To be cited in AI Overviews, lead sections with direct answers under question-based headings, use lists and tables for comparable information, and add FAQ and Article schema. These patterns make your content easy to extract.

Authority and freshness matter too. Comprehensive, interlinked coverage of a topic and regularly updated content increase the odds of selection. Because AI Overviews often cite pages that rank outside the top three, well-structured content has a real opportunity to win citations.
